14th Edition: Simplifying Value For The Week

THE GP NEWSLETTER

Happy Monday Athletes!

My goal is to provide value each week to those of you who take the five minutes to read the GP newsletter.

This weekend, my family time was so rich that I chose to lean into that rather than set aside time for a FULL newsletter.

But something cool happened last night. I was able to simplify my value for the week and provide these two thoughts:

1) The Pink Cheetahs took their first loss this weekend and while losing is never the goal, it turned out to be an incredible life lesson. You see, my daughter is only 5 years old and this is her first team sport she has ever played. As the goals started pouring on, I saw the look of sadness on her face and she said the words "we can't win, they keep scoring more goals on us." The tears were sad, but I saw the first opportunity to talk to her about the art of losing.

I was never a good loser as a kid, in fact I was pretty insufferable to be around after a loss. Thankfully, my parents constantly challenged me on how to deal with the loss. Intro sportsmanship. For 5 year-olds it is as simple as giving the other team high fives. I was able to talk my daughter through the ability to show respect to someone after a loss and congratulate them on their win.

I thought coming into coaching young girls that we could focus on the process and keep winning and losing for an older age. I've quickly learned it is important to support the discussions they want to have now. Instead of avoiding questions about winning and losing we can have honest ones and adopt the very important aspects of competitive sports.

The Pink Cheetahs will not have double days this week or extra conditioning. Instead, we will stay consistent with the fundamentals of the game and continue to seek joy in this sport each week.

2) The second recommendation is to watch this goal from my local club Orange County Soccer Club. When we speak about movement off the ball this goal by Milan Illoski showcases exactly that. Watch as he allows the ball to come across his body to shake off a defender and have a great opportunity to put the ball in the back of net. Pure class from him.

Upcoming next week: I share my Off-Season priorities for the pros as they near the end of their season!
